Perfil

Desde 1985 ha estado activamente involucrado a investigaciones de tipo entomol贸gico. Primero dedicado al estudio de insectos de importancia m茅dico-veterinaria, vinculado al Centro Internacional de Investigaciones M茅dicas, CIDEIM en Cali, Colombia. Durante 12 a帽os investig贸 sobre vectores de Leishmania, filarias, malaria, Trypanosoma y dengue. Posteriormente, desde su vinculaci贸n a la Universidad del Valle investiga aspectos relacionados con el control integrado de plagas, en especial la hormiga arriera. Actualmente es investigador senior (Colciencias) e investigador asociado Ad honorem del CIDEIM.

Proyectos en ejecuci贸n

Interacci贸n de la mosca blanca, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) con sus endosimbiontes: modula o determina la transmisi贸n de virus en yuca? Colciencias, 2015-2017. Se busca determinar el potencial papel de los endosimbontes en el proceso de transmisi贸n de ciertos virus en yuca.

Co-Investigador en los siguientes proyectos:聽

Funciones ecol贸gicas y hormigas en cafetales con diferente intensidad de manejo. 2013-2016 (IP) (Colciencias-Univalle)

Se plantea analizar dos funciones ecol贸gicas relacionadas con hormigas (depredaci贸n sobre broca y modificaci贸n de suelo) en un contexto de variaci贸n en la intensidad de manejo agr铆cola en cafetales colombianos del Cauca. Se propone por un lado caracterizar el h谩bitat de cafetales e inventariar la mirmecofauna con potencial depredador de broca en 20 fincas. Por otro lado se busca medir el efecto de la adici贸n de colonias de hormigas depredadoras sobre la broca del caf茅 en el follaje de cafetos durante todo el ciclo de producci贸n, y tambi茅n estimar el impacto de la hormiga arriera sobre las propiedades del suelo en cafetales de sol y de sombra.

Desarrollo de tecnolog铆as innovadoras para el manejo integrado de plagas y enfermedades limitantes de pl谩tano y banano en el Valle del Cauca. 2014-2017 (Regal铆as Gobernaci贸n del Valle, Universidad Nacional, CIAT, Univalle)聽

Desarrollar谩 las actividades para la evaluaci贸n de enemigos naturales en el control biol贸gico de picudos para el manejo del complejo de enfermedades y plagas en el cultivo de pl谩tano y/o banano.

Beneficios ecol贸gicos de los cafetales de sombra en Colombia. 2015-2017. (Universidad de G枚ttingen, Universidad de Padua, Univalle)

El proyecto caracterizar谩 la carabidofauna y mirmecofauna de fincas cafeteras de la zona de Mondomo, Cauca, para buscar si existe efecto del manejo sobre esta fauna asociada. Adem谩s, se examinar谩 el efecto de la actividad de hormigas que anidan en suelo y c贸mo cambian las propiedades del suelo y la productividad. Por otro lado, mediante is贸topos se examinar谩 si existe los 谩rboles de sombra leguminosos toman, a trav茅s de sus ra铆ces, nutrientes de capas de suelo diferentes a los cafetos. 聽

Intereses de docencia

El control integrado y su aplicaci贸n en los campos agr铆colas, en particular agroecol贸gicos, son los elementos centrales de sus actividades docentes. Las asignaturas Entomolog铆a Agr铆cola y Entomolog铆a Aplicada as铆 como su participaci贸n en los cursos de Agroecolog铆a y Geociencias canalizan en parte esos intereses. Actualmente, colabora con el Postgrado en Ciencias-Biolog铆a ofreciendo los cursos de Seminario y T贸picos en Biolog铆a.

Professional Profile

Actively involved in entomology research since 1985. Initially, dedicated to the study of insects of medical-veterinary importance at CIDEIM in Cali, Colombia. During 12 years carried out research on Leishmania, filarial, malaria, Trypanosoma and dengue vectors. At present, he is doing research on aspects related to the integrated control of 聽insects, especially, the leaf-cutting ant. At present, is senior researcher (Colciencias) and Ad honorem associate investigator (CIDEIM).

Co-I in the following research projects:

Ecological functions and ants on coffee plantations with various management intensities, 2013-2016. (Colciencias-Univalle).

The project proposes to analyze two ecological functions related to ants (depredation on the coffee berry borer and soil modification) in a context of variation in the intensity of agricultural management of Colombian coffee plantations in Cauca. The purpose of the project, on the one hand, is to characterize the habitat of the coffee plantations and inventory the mirmecofauna with predatory potential for the coffee berry borer on 20 farms. On the other hand, it attempts to measure the effect of the addition of predatory ant colonies on the coffee berry borer in the foilage of small coffee plants during the entire productive cycle, and also to estimate the impact of leaf-cutting ants on properties of the soil on sun and shade coffee plantations.聽

The Development of Innovative Technologies for the integrated management of plagues and limiting diseases of plantain and banana in the Valle del Cauca, 2014-2017. (Government of Valle del Cauca royalties, Universidad Nacional, CIAT, Univalle).

To develop activities to evaluate natural enemies for the biological control of weevils and the management of the complex of diseases and plagues in plantain and/or banana crops.聽

Ecological benefits of shade coffee in Colombia, 2015-2017. (University of G枚ttingen, University of Padua, Univalle).

The project seeks to characterize carbidofauna and mirmecofauna on coffee farms in the area of Mondomo, Cauca to discover whether their management affects the associated fauna. Additionally, to examine the effect of ground-nesting ant activity and how properties of the soil change. At the same time, using isotopes, leguminous shade trees will be studied to see if, through their roots, they absorb nutrients from layers of soil different from those of the coffee plants.聽

Teaching Interests


Principal focus of teaching activities is on integrated control and its application on farmland, especially agro-ecological crops. Agricultural Entomology and Applied Entomology courses, as well as participation in Agro-ecology and Geo-sciences courses, partially canalize these interests. Also, presently collaborating with the Graduate Program in Sciences 鈥 Biology, offering Seminar and Topic courses in Biology.
